Junior Coaching

Every term is an 8 week coaching programme which give us 1-3 spare weeks for rain offs or public holidays.

We will always endeavour to run the sessions. Please always assume tennis is on. We will contact you if tennis is cancelled due to inclement weather. So if you don’t hear from us, please arrive for tennis as normal.

If we don’t get 8 weeks of coaching in then we will run make up sessions or you will receive a credit against your account towards next time.

Train twice, improve faster!

Love your tennis?

Junior club members can receive a $60 discount on a second 8 week group coaching registration.

How it works:

  1. Book and pay for your first lesson at the normal rate.

  2. Email coach@mtc.nz to request a second weekly lesson.

  3. Let us know the group you're already in, and the second group you'd like to join.

That's it — we'll sort out the rest.

Red Ball

Red Ball is the perfect first step for young players (around ages 5–8). Played on a smaller court with low-bounce, slower-moving balls, it's designed to help little ones learn the game at a pace that suits them. The bigger, softer balls are easier to see, hit, and rally with — so kids spend more time playing and less time chasing.

Sessions focus on the fundamentals that matter most at this age: balance, coordination, movement, and ball handling, all wrapped up in plenty of games and laughter. It's a relaxed, encouraging environment where every child can build confidence, make friends, and discover a love for tennis.

Orange Ball

Orange Ball is the next step up for players who've found their feet on the red ball (around ages 8–10). The court gets bigger, the balls move a little faster, and young players start putting real rallies together — building on the basics and beginning to play proper points.

Sessions develop the skills that take the game to the next level: footwork, racket control, consistency, and starting to think about where the ball is going. There's still plenty of games and energy, but now with a growing focus on technique and match play, so kids gain confidence and start to feel like real tennis players.

Green Ball

Green Ball is played on the full-size court with balls only slightly slower than standard — a big step up in pace and space (around ages 10–12). This is where the game really starts to look like the real thing.

Sessions sharpen the complete package: technique, footwork, shot selection, consistency, and the tactics behind winning points. With longer rallies and competitive match play, players build the fitness, confidence, and game sense to progress to the full-pace yellow ball.

Great courts, great people, great fun — the green ball is where players become competitors.

Yellow Ball

Yellow Ball is the full game — standard balls on a full court, for players around 12 and up. With strong foundations built through the earlier stages, players now use the same ball and court as the adults, ready to compete and keep improving.

Sessions focus on sharpening technique, developing consistency and power, refining tactics, and building match craft and fitness. It's the natural next step for older juniors who want to take their tennis further — into club tennis, interclub, tournaments, or our development squads.

Great courts, great people, great fun — this is the full game.

Development Squads

Our Junior Development Squads are for committed young players ready to take their tennis further. Designed for juniors who've got the basics down and want to push on, squads offer focused, high-quality coaching in a motivating group environment.

Training goes beyond the fundamentals to build the complete player: technique, footwork, fitness, tactics, and the mental side of competing. Players are grouped by age and ability, so everyone is challenged at the right level and progresses alongside others with similar goals.

It's the ideal pathway for juniors aiming to play interclub, enter tournaments, or simply become the best player they can be — all guided by our experienced coaching team.
